The Abyss of Life
Lord Yoshii Toranaga leads his army back to Edo following the passing of his son, Nagakado. Despite his declining health and persistent cough, Toranaga remains resolute, utilizing this time to set his surrender plan in motion. His trusted general, Hiromatsu, expresses his discontent with the surrender plan in a private meeting, revealing a growing dissent within the ranks.
Hiromatsu's opposition spreads, causing further division among Toranaga's vassals. He even goes as far as threatening to end his own life if his demands are not met. However, Toranaga remains steadfast, refusing to yield to Hiromatsu's ultimatum.
In a cunning move, Toranaga deceives Father Martin and the Catholics by constructing a Catholic church adjacent to the teahouses promised to Madam Gin. This strategic maneuver showcases Toranaga's shrewdness despite his weakened physical state.
Meanwhile, Blackthorne seeks alliances to further his own ambitions, approaching Yabushige with an offer to sail under his banner instead of Toranaga's. Despite initial reluctance, Yabushige considers Blackthorne's proposition, signaling potential shifts in alliances.
Mariko, during a poignant tea ceremony, comes to terms with her unhappy marriage to Buntaro, leaving both deeply affected by her realization.
As Toranaga visits his son's grave, he solemnly vows not to squander the sacrifices made by his loved ones. It becomes evident that Toranaga's apparent surrender is part of a calculated ruse, sacrificing his son and closest ally to deceive his adversaries.
In Osaka, Lady Ochiba-no-Kata aligns with Ishido, posing a threat to Toranaga's position. Ishido proposes a strategic marriage alliance to bolster their position against Toranaga. However, Empress Daiyoin's sudden illness and dying wish for peace add complexity to the situation.
The episode ends with Toranaga sending Mariko to join Yabushige and Blackthorne, showing his plan moving forward. Tensions rise as Toranaga's full strategy becomes clear, leading to the approaching climax.
