Next morning, Gemma leaving home for work and meets Neil, who is out for a run and stops to greet her. He compliments her outfit, which makes her blush. As Gemma drives to work, she comes across a motorcycle accident and help the injured driver and call an ambulance. The driver throws up on her shirt and she’s worried due to an important meeting she has that day. Gemma's important meeting turns out to be with Anwar. With anwar questioning her, she realizes she's unaware of many aspects of her life, including financial details, which Simon usually handles. Anwar tells her that in a divorce, simon can take 50% of everything as the default including her salary, her saving her pension even when he cheated on her. And since simon manage the finance of the family, he likely has already hidden money away in preparation. Anwar suggests she find out how her husband has been hiding money and look after her financial interests while keep pretending to be a good wife. At a school building project inauguration, while Simon is speaking, Neil flirts with Gemma. During the after-party, Gemma asks Neil, who's also their accountant, to review her finances over dinner, away from Simon, to prevent him from suspecting her distrust. Neil agrees, looking as though he also has something else in mind. Ros comes over and talks about the past times when she was still in school. She also hints that it's a boring town, so people have nothing else to do but sleep around. Ros informs Gemma about Kate changing surgeries, and they will talk about it tomorrow. Gemma plans for Carly to befriend Kate by pretending to be pregnant and subtly find out if she and Simon have any plans together. Carly does what Gemma told her and successfully starts a conversation with Kate about being pregnant. Carly comes back to the car, surprised that Gemma's plan actually worked out. Gemma tells her that was also what she did when she first moved here to live with Simon, thinking she made some friends, but it turns out they were just fake. Later, she comes with Simon to see helen; her doctor tells them that her condition is becoming critical. Gemma still pats Simon's hand and comforts him as a loving wife, despite what he did to her. Helen tells them she's in so much pain and doesn't want to suffer anymore, but Simon doesn't want her to stop her treatment. In the evening, Gemma dresses up for the dinner meeting with Neil, and both Tom and Simon give her weird comments instead of the nice, proper compliments she deserves. Frustrated, Gemma keys Simon's car, leaving her cab driver confused about what's going on. The scene shifts to Carly and Ros making moves to gather information for Gemma. Carly offers Kate a book about pregnancy as a way to bond, while Ros visits Simon's house, inviting herself in under the pretense of talking about Gemma. Both are acting under Gemma's instructions to get closer to Kate and Simon. Meanwhile, Gemma arrives at the dinner date with Neil.Carly invents a story about how a drunken night led to her pregnancy to engage Kate, who admits her situation with Simon is complex. Meanwhile, Simon confesses to loving both Kate and Gemma but is afraid to tell Gemma the truth for fear of losing her. Simon has the feeling that Gemma sent Ros over tonight. Ros initially denies it but then admits that Gemma sent her here to ask about the financial issues, not suspecting Simon's affair because Gemma noticed that Simon seems stressed recently. After a while, he admits his financial struggles. At the restaurant, Neil seems more interested in flirting with Gemma than discussing Simon's financial situation. Gemma tries to steer the conversation towards Simon's work and financial stability, but Neil avoids talking about Simon. Neil makes a bold move, suggesting Gemma sleep with him, then the waiter interrupts to ask if they are ready for the main course. Kate tells Carly that she met Gemma a few times and describes her as an arrogant and condescending person. She adds that Simon didn't want to cheat but was drawn to their connection despite the age difference. Kate reveals she pressured Simon to end things with Gemma, but he has not followed through. Carly shares her brief post-breakup feelings with Kate, leading Kate to reflect on her situation. Simon believes his financial troubles will resolve in six months through property sales. Simon reaches out and stay very close to ros to tell her something. Then tom burst in and catch them looking all shady, tom asks about when his mom will be back home then leave. After Closing the door, simon begs ros to not tell gemma about his money problem. Neil bluntly reveals that he has booked a room, but Gemma had already knew about that also his intention with her over their five years knowing each other. In the hotel room, Neil tries to rationalize infidelity as something common among men, attempting to normalize the act and lure Gemma into reciprocating. Despite her initial reservations, Gemma decides to engage with Neil however she still seems detached. The next morning, Gemma is leaving and dismisses Neil's hopes for another encounter. When the conversation turns to disclosing their affair, Gemma reveals her true intent: using the affair to blackmail Neil to get Simon's financial information. He finally agrees to provide her with the documents. Gemma returns home and gets some rest on the couch; after a while, she is woken up by Simon and Tom.
Affairs and Blackmail
They tell her about the negative reviews online about her on a general practitioner review website. Gemma is shocked but doesn’t have time to deal with this yet, and she is just concerned about Tom, who has read all of these bad reviews about his mom. Gemma arrives at the office and talks with Luke, her colleague who also handles Helen's case. He tells her that Helen's condition is getting worse and she wants to see Gemma later today. Ros comes in and is quite touchy with him. He intends to walk away but then turns back and tells her that he isn't comfortable with her inappropriate behavior at the workplace. Ros is embarrassed and she fills the silence by updating Gemma on Simon. She is clearly biased and tries to convince Gemma to stay with Simon because he still loves her, ignoring the real problems they're facing, especially since Simon is about to have a baby with another woman. In the evening, Gemma reviews the financial report with Neil, which reveals the severity of Simon and Gemma's financial crisis. Simon has invested all of their money in his development project, and they have to wait for the project to be completed and for him to manage to sell some apartments. Their son Tom's education fund, provided by Gemma’s parents, is drained; their house is re-mortgaged, and they're on the brink of bankruptcy. The only lifeline appears to be an investor named Whitestone, who has sent in a substantial amount of money, but their identity and intentions are unclear, and Neil suspects it might be a pyramid scheme. When Gemma is stressed out, Neil asks if they can meet again, and Gemma chuckles, saying that Neil doesn’t seems afraid that she is blackmailing him.
Family Crisis and Change of Heart
But Neil reveals that he doesn’t like Simon himself and will investigate Whitestone for her. Just at that moment, Anna, Neil's wife, walks in on them and seems uncomfortable. In the afternoon, Gemma goes to meet Helen and tells her about the divorce plan, and how simon has messed up their finances and will lose everything. Gemma, as a doctor, will still be fine and able to take care of Tom and Helen. However, for Helen, this isn't enough; she continues to add emotional pressure on Gemma to be lenient with Simon and take care of him no matter what. After leaving the nursing home, she calls Anwar and tells him she wants to proceed with the legal action. Kate comes to the bar where Carly works, with Simon following her. They have a fight because Kate wants to break up with him, and Simon chases after her to convince her to change her mind. But Kate is fed up with Simon's lies and that he hasn’t ended things with Gemma. Simon refuses to inform Gemma about them, and he leaves. Carly informs Gemma about what happened, also mentioning that it seems like Kate has already terminated her pregnancy. Gemma returns home to find Simon distressed and Tom watching TV, oblivious to everything in the world. Gemma goes to cook while the two men staying on the couch. The next day, early in the morning, someone rings the phone and they learn that Simon's mother has passed away, not from her illness but from suicide, using sleeping pills she had stored up over time. The family shares the news with Tom. In a moment of vulnerability, Gemma offers comfort to both Tom and Simon and probably reconsiders her decision. Anwar calls Gemma, but this time she decides against proceeding with the previous plan and wants to try again with Simon.
