A flashback showing the dying Taikō's request to Toranaga, setting the stage for the political turmoil to follow.
A major conflict arises when Lord Ishido clashes with the Catholics over John Blackthorne's Protestant beliefs. Ishido decides to lock up Blackthorne, not realizing it will set off a series of events.
While in captivity, Blackthorne teams up with a friar who spills secrets about Portugal's shady dealings in Macao, like manipulating the silk trade and training assassins. Toranaga sees an opportunity and uses Blackthorne to stir up trouble among his rivals, strengthening his own position.
Things get tense when a ninja is sent to kill Blackthorne, but Toranaga steps in and saves him, adding another layer of complexity to the power struggle.
Meanwhile, Blackthorne's interactions with Toranaga and Mariko shed light on the cultural clashes and shifting loyalties of the time. As Ishido and the Christian leaders demand Blackthorne's death, Yabushige swoops in to rescue him, making the political landscape even more chaotic.
