After leaving the school, Gemma and Simon bring Tom to a diner, and the atmosphere is tense. Gemma asks Tom why he hit Max, and he says it was related to Isobel, Becky's daughter, and that she hates Simon for bullying her mom when she worked for him. Simon defends himself, but Tom brings back the fact that he hit Gemma. Gemma practices parenting with Tom here, but he stops her and tells them he will wait in the car. Gemma thinks there is more to the reason he hit Max than just fighting over Isobel, and she thinks Simon told Tom something bad about her that makes his son not want to look at her anymore. She tells Simon, regardless of their conflict, they need to work together to help Tom. Gemma comes back and finds Neil bringing his things out to the truck to move away. Anna comes out to greet Gemma, and Gemma tells her about Tom. Gemma pours herself a glass of wine and answers Ros's message, then suddenly Tom walks in. He had an argument with Simon in the car about Simon wanting him to switch schools. When Gemma asks him if there is anything he can tell her, the doorbell rings. She goes to get the door and sees Simon. He convinces Gemma to let him in to apologize to Tom in person. However, they start fighting again; Simon keeps accusing Tom of fighting with his best friend over a girl, but Tom says there is nothing between him and isobel and runs upstairs. Gemma believes her son but she has something in mind and gives Simon a beer, asking him to stay for dinner. Simon is skeptical at first but agrees when Gemma mentions that they both have to help Tom. At that moment, Kate calls Simon, and he lies to her (just like he used to lie to Gemma) that he has to stay late for work. While he goes out to talk with Kate, Gemma sets up her phone to record it, but James suddenly calls her and ruins it. Simon comes back in and says that he lied just to protect Kate. Simon suddenly mentions that he has dreamt about this house before and then casually brings up a spicy moment they shared in the kitchen when he still lived there. Simon notices that Tom has left his phone on the counter and wants to look into it, but Gemma opposes the idea, believing they should let Tom explain his problems himself. Gemma calls Tom for dinner while Simon begins to question her about James. Tom is shocked to see his dad staying for dinner. Gemma explains that they need to eat and then work things out together. Trying to address the issue again, Gemma asks why he hit Max. Now calmer, Tom explains that Max is interested in Isobel and doesn't like Tom talking to her. The situation escalated when Max started shouting at him, leading to a fight. Gemma is satisfied with the answer and wants to arrange a meeting with the school the next day for a settlement, hoping Tom can return to school. Simon doesn't seem entirely convinced, but his attention shifts when he sees a glass he used to use during dinner, realizing Gemma remembers every detail about him. After dinner, the parents clean up together, and Tom leaves the kitchen to go to his room, listening to loud music. Gemma sets up her phone to record again and then approaches Simon to dry his hands. She slowly undresses and tries to seduce Simon. Initially, he refuses but is soon drawn in, only to quickly notice that the phone camera is pointed at them. He checks the phone, calls her desperate and pathetic, but Gemma throws the phone away, telling him she wants to continue what they were doing anyway, despite their mutual hatred. They then go to another room. Afterward, Gemma walks Simon to the door as if nothing happened and reminds him about the meeting at Tom's school the next morning.
Just as Simon leaves, Anna crosses the street and comes to Gemma's door. Gemma explains the visit was about Tom's problem, and Anna tells her there's no need to explain. Anna tells Gemma she feels younger after Neil left and then walks in. Gemma tells her about Tom's problem. Unable to hold back any longer, Anna admits she came to Gemma's house earlier and could hear her and Simon. She criticizes Gemma for never throwing away Simon's things and keeping herself stuck in her old life, waiting for Simon to come back, even though it has been two years and she is now dating James. Anna then goes on to reveal that she will leave the town and go to be with her sister in Edinburgh. Tom walks in, and she tells him about it too. She tries to ask him about Max, but he refuses to talk about that. When he leaves, Anna, in tears, tells Gemma that what she and Simon are doing is destroying their son, and Anna will soon no longer be here to help.
The next day, Gemma goes to the school and meets James. He tried to call her last night, but she didn’t answer. Gemma makes up some work excuse, then Simon arrives.
Gemma and Simon come in to meet with Karen, the principal, but things don’t go as planned.
The principal refuses to take Tom back, saying what he did was an unacceptable violent attack. She also mentions that Max told her Gemma went to see him to ask about Tom.
It turns out Simon had already sent an email to her that morning saying that Tom will be moving to a private school on the other side of the city where Simon works.
Gemma, pissed, shouts at Simon on the way out, but he ignores her. He then receives a video of Tom with Isobel and Max at the café hub in Simon's workplace. He gets angry and flips the table, then continues to flip stuff from other tables, making a whole scene. Simon shares the video with Gemma out of pity, and they both drive there.
The kids had already left, and Simon is mostly upset because he thinks what Tom did embarrasses him and his image. Simon is now more sure that Isobel is the main reason for the fight, and he shows Gemma the photo he finds in Tom's phone storage. Simon leaves, and Ros comes to meet Gemma for a lunch date; she’s getting married the next day. But Gemma spots Isobel and runs after her.
She manages to convince Isobel to reveal the story. It turns out that at the night of the wedding party at Simon's house, Tom and Isobel kissed, but then he wanted more. Isobel didn’t want to and told him to stop, but he didn’t listen to her until she had to scream and hit him to get him to stop. Isobel told Max, and that's why he confronted Tom. Isobel feels sorry for Tom and doesn’t want to make a big deal about it. Gemma tells her that Tom was absolutely wrong and she should tell her mom about what happened. Ros catches up and tells her not to worry about the lunch date and to go if she has to. Gemma wishes her the best and goes to Anna, as she calls to inform Gemma that she found Tom. Gemma arrives, and Anna says Tom likely heard what she and Simon did the other night. Gemma goes to talk to Tom about Isobel, and it turns out Simon knew about that too, but he still thinks Isobel is the problem. Gemma asks Tom why he did that to Isobel and apologizes about the other night. Tom, grossed out, runs away just when James arrives and tries to talk to him. Here, James is also informed of Gemma and Simon's affair. Tom rides to Simon’s house with Gemma following him. However, Kate doesn’t want Tom to get in, and Simon goes out to have some words with him about how Tom embarrassed him near his workplace, and now it’s time for Tom to come back to his mom. Tom cries because just a few days ago they still told him it's his home. Simon pushes him out, and Gemma arrives. She tells Simon that Tom heard them last night, but Simon plays it off. Gemma warns him that Tom will never forgive him for throwing him out, but Simon closes and locks the door. Later, Tom watches the video of him flipping the table, and Gemma finds him. They have a talk. She tells him that even though what he did to Isobel and Max was wrong, she will always love and care for him and would never close the door on him. Tom is ashamed of what he did and wants to go away from there. Gemma tells him she will go with him, but before leaving, she needs to do something first. The next day, Gemma makes it to Ros' wedding, The house is put on the market on the same day, and Gemma sends Simon a message saying, “You win, we’re gone.” She then drives away with Tom out of the town.
